Alice Hudgell was
born 1871 in High Street Wormley, Hertfordshire one of four
children born to David Hudgell and Amelia Boultwood.
Amelia had already been
widowed when she met and married David and she had three
children already, one of whom was handicapped and deaf.
Amelia was 12
years David's senior and David lied about his age on
census's - as some men did - to make it look as if he was
older or the same age as his wife.
In the 1861 census he was stated as 16 and
in the 1871 as 45 but in the 1881 census back down to 39
years of age making him only then 3 years younger than his
wife when in fact he was 9 years younger.
In 1891 they were living in
High Road Wormley but by the end of that year Amelia has
died and David moved in with his daughter Emma and
husband Frederick Baker
In early 1897
Alice married Benjamin William Speller a gardener and in 1901
Benjamin and Alice were living at 11 Turnford Cottages Cheshunt
Hertfordshire with their son Horace aged 3 years old, their daughter
Florence Alice Speller sadly died before the age of one.

life outside Benjamin's sisters house in Tottenham |
