JOHN HUDGELL ID 126 Born 1790 in Sawbridgeworth Hertfordshire son of Stephen Hudgell and Elizabeth Rumbold husband of Charlotte Hyde Even though John Hudgell have been in trouble with the law before 1841 he then had 2 years of trouble with the law, perhaps him and his family had fallen on hard times, perhaps he got too tempted we will never know but this old man broke the law.
Essex Quarter Session Rolls Essex document ref Q/SR 1100 John Hudgell in court 6th April 1841 Not guilty puts himself (no punishment given) The jurors for our Lady the Queen, upon their oath present, the JOHN HUDGELL late of the parish of Chigwell in the County of Essex labourer On the 12th day of March in the fourth year of the Reign of our sovereign Lady Victoria by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, with Force and Arms, at the parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid: 68 pounds weight of Oats Straw of the value of two shillings Of the Goods and Chattels of Henry Hancock then and there being found (Larceny) Feloniously did steal, take and carry away, again the peace of our Sovereign Lady the Queen, her Crown and Dignity. To be imprisoned and kept to hard labor (sic) in the goal at Springfield 2 calendar months.

Labourer On the 31st day of December in the fourth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, with Force and Arms, at the parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid 2 Elm boards of the value of six shillings of the Goods and Chattels of Joseph Savill, then and there before found (Larceny) Feloniously did steal, take and carry sway, against the peace of our Sovereign Lady the Queen, her Brown and Dignity. 2 calendar months hard labour for both offences.
