Jonathan Hudgell

1791 - 1863

 

Saddle and Harness Maker

and Licensee of 'The Greyhound'

 

 

 

  Jonathon Hudgell born Gipping in Suffolk publican of the Greyhound after his fathers death in 1821
  1818 married his cousin Temperance Hudgell from Baylham Suffolk the daughter of John Hudgell and Elizabeth Edwards

 

   

Children

1818 Sarah married Elijah Gladwell in 1840 one of their descendents became a journalist in the 1980's
1821 John died age at the age of 27 leaving his girlfriend Rachel Borley expecting their child, she christened her Belinda Hudgell Borley
1824 Joanna died aged 10 months
1825 Elinor (Ellen) no other information
1830 Mary Ann no other information
1833 Alfred Jonathan died aged 15 months in 1834
1835 Elizabeth died before the age of 3 in 1838
1839 Alfred Elijah born at the Greyhound pub and also a Saddle and Harness maker married Harriet Rose from Lawshall Suffolk had 14 children some of those taking the family name into Essex but some still remain in Suffolk. Elijah died in 1904 but Harriet went on to live until 1942

 

1844 Jonathan must have fallen on hard times as on 5th September 1844 (after leaving The Greyhound in 1841) he was sentenced to 6 weeks hard labour in Bury St Edmunds jail for stealing peas from a field in Cockfield, Suffolk the property of William Baldwin. As reported in the Bury and Norwich Post on 11th September 1844

 

Jonathan died in 1863 aged 70 on his death certificate his

occupation if stated as 'collar maker' (Master)

 Temperance was present at his death

Temperance died in 1866 aged 64 of consumption (tuberculosis)
