The Will of Jonathan Hudgwell of Ipswich 10th October 1689 Buried at St. Matthew's Ipswich 13th October 1689
In the Name of God, Amen. This tenth day of October, Anno Domini 1689: and in the first year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord and Lady, William and Mary, by the Grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King and Queen, defenders of the faith, I, Jonathan Hudgwell the elder, of Ipswich in the County of Suffolk, Yeoman, being ill in body but of perfect mind and sound disposing memory (thanks be given to Almighty God), do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator, hoping to be saved in and through the merits of Jesus Christ, my alone Saviour and Redeemer, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named, and for my Worldly Estate I dispose thereof as follows; Imprimus - I give and devise unto my loving wife Mary all that my messuage or tenement withall and singular, the outhouses buildings, barns, stables, yards, gardens, orchards, lands and appurtenances thereunto, belonging or any ways appertaining, both free and copyhold, situate, lying and being in Trimley St. Mary and Trimley St. Martin, in the said County of Suffolk, as the same was late in the tenure and occupation of Nicholas Rose, and now in the tenure and occupation of one Bottle or his assigns, to have and to hold the same unto my said wife Mary for, and during the term of her natural life. And after her decease, I give and devise my said messuage or tenement, lands and all and singular, the premises with their and every of their appurtenances, unto my two sons, Jonathan Hudgwell and John Hudgwell, equally to be divided between them, and to their heirs and assigns for over. Item - I give and devise unto my said wife Mary all those my two messuages or tenements, with the yards, gardens and appurtenances to them and either of them, belonging, situate, lying and being in the parish of St. Margaret in Ipswich aforesaid, as the same are now in the several tenures or occupations of one May and (name omitted) and their assigns, to have and to hold the same unto my said wife for and during the term of her natural life. and after her decease, I give and devise my said two messuages or tenements with their appurtenances in the said parish of St. Margaret unto my said son Jonathan Hudgwell, and to his heirs and assigns for ever. Item - I give and bequeath unto my said wife Mary, for and during the term of her natural life, all that my messuages or tenement with the yards and appurtenances thereunto, belonging, situate, lying and being in Ropemakers Lane in the parish of St. Clement in Ipswich aforesaid, wherein my sister Elizabeth Hawkins now dwelleth, and after the decease of my said wife, I give and devise my said messuage or tenement last mentioned, with their appurtenances in Ropemakers Lane, unto my said son John Hudgwell and to his heirs and assigns for ever. Item - I give and devise unto my grandchild, Elizabeth Friett, daughter of my late deceased sonin-law, Thomas Friett, all that my messuage or tenement wherein John Coe, a tallow chandler now dwelleth, with all the yards and appurtenances thereunto, belonging, situate, lying and being in the parish of St. Matthew in Ipswich aforesaid, to have and to held the same unto the said Elizabeth Friett, grandchild, and to the heirs of her body lawfully to be begotten. And for want of such issue of her body, then I give and bequeath my said messuage or tenement with their appurtenances unto my daughter Elizabeth, now the wife of Daniel Jarmy of Ipswich aforesaid, for and during the term of her natural life. And after the decease of my said daughter, I give and devise my said messuage or tenement with their appurtenances, in this way will last afore mentioned, unto my said two sons, Jonathan Hudgwell and John Hudgwell, equally to be divided, and to their heirs and assigns for ever, if my said grandchild Elizabeth Friett dies without issue of her body, as aforesaid, and not otherwise. Item I give and bequeath unto my said sister, Elizabeth Hawkins, the sum of ten pounds of current English money. Also I give unto her son, Jonathan Hawkins, my kinsman, the sum of ten pounds of current English money, to be paid unto them by my Executrix hereafter named, within three months next after my decease. If they, my said sister and her son Jonathan, or either of them, shall and do, within fourteen days next after my decease deliver, or cause to be delivered unto my said wife or her assigns a will, which I made on the seventh day of this instant month to be cancelled, which said will and all former wills I do hereby revoke and the same. Item I do give and bequeath unto my kinsman, Edward Hawkins, another son of my said sister, the sum of seven pounds of current English money, to be paid unto him when he shall attain his age of one twenty years. Item I do give and bequeath unto my grandchild, John Jarmy, son of the aforesaid Daniel Jarmy, the sum of five pounds of current English money, to be paid unto the said John Jarmy, my grandchild by my Executrix when he shall attain his full age of one and twenty years. Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth, wife of the said Daniel Jarmy, the sum of ten pounds of current English money. Item All the rest, residue and remainder of my monies, bills, bonds, mortgages, debts, goods chattels, cattle, household stuffs, implements of household and personal estate, whatsoever and wheresoever, I give and bequeath unto my said wife Mary, she paying out of the same all my just debts, legacies, funeral charges and charges for the probate of this my will. And I do hereby nominate, make and ordain the said Mary Hudgwell my wife, sole and only Executrix of this my last will and testament, and do desire my very loving friend William Wade of Ipswich aforesaid, Gentleman, to be supervisor of this my will, in aiding and assisting my said wife in the right performance and due management thereof. And I do herby give and bequeath unto the said William Wade the sum of forty shillings of current English money towards his great care and trouble in assisting my said wife as a foresaid, desiring and requiring my said wife to perform the same in every respect as my trust she will, charging all my said children to be dutiful to their said mother, and live in love, one towards another. In witness thereof to this my will, contained in four sheets and a half of paper, I the said Jonathan Hudgwell, have set my hand and seal to every one of them the day and year in the first sheet written.

This will was proved in Ipswich in the presence of Master William Knight, Clerk Surrogate of the venerable Henry Fauconberge, Dr of Laws, official of the Archdeacon of Suffolk, this 16th day of October anno domini 1689, by the oath of the Executrix named in the same to whom administration was granted 16th October 1689
